Givenchy Retrospective at Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s? I think about THAT black dress, THOSE pearls and THE iconic sunglasses. That elegant black dress was created by Hubert de Givenchy. From the 22nd of October 2014 to the 18th of January 2015, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid is holding the first major Givenchy retrospective. The exhibition will cover the launch of Maison Givenchy in 1952 up until the couturier’s retirement in 1995.

This is the perfect excuse to visit Madrid, wandering among the 100 items selected from museums and private collections worldwide. Some of the pieces have never been displayed before. The Givenchy retrospective is presented in an intuitive manner, based on references and thematic connections, both conceptual and aesthetic. Curated by Eloy Martínez de la Pera, the garments will interact with art from the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection, creating an interesting dialogue. There is a great brochure to download from the Museum’s web, an excellent overview to whet your curiosity.

We don’t often have the pleasure of grand fashion retrospectives in Spain, so I’m really looking forward to this! Time to start buying tickets to Madrid…
